At What Ages Should Children Be Examined
What is a comprehensive eye exam
In contrast to a vision screening, a comprehensive eye exam can detect a vision disorders and medical conditions. Eye drops are used to dilate the pupils, which allows a more thorough examination.
Your baby should receive a comprehensive exam if:
- Your baby is premature
- Your baby is at high risk for medical complications
- There is a family history of childhood vision disorders
Your toddler should receive a comprehensive exam:
- When reaching 3 years of age
- Before starting kindergarten or first grade (about age 5 or 6)
School-aged children should receive comprehensive exams:
- Every two years if no vision correction is required
- If your child needs eyeglasses or contact lenses, he or she should have an exam annually or according to your eye doctor’s recommendations
